Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, begins as a bacterial infection in the mouth that can progress and potentially lead to tooth loss due to the destruction of the tissue that surrounds your teeth. It often starts as gingivitis, characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Without appropriate care, it can escalate to periodontitis, leading to gums pulling away from the teeth and forming pockets that become infected.

Our mouths are full of bacteria, which, combined with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless “plaque” on teeth. While brushing and flossing can get rid of this plaque, it can harden and form “tartar” that regular brushing doesn’t clean. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar.

Several factors can enhance the likelihood of developing periodontal disease, including smoking, hormonal changes in women, diabetes, other illnesses and their treatments, and genetic susceptibility.
